Join us to Support Divestment on Friday 12th December at 10:15 & 11:30

Please join us on the 12th December outside County Hall and call for West Sussex Council to divest from companies complicit in breaches of international law and human rights abuses in Palestine

At 10:15am the full county council will meet. The first item on the agenda is the divestment appeal backed by our petition of almost 3,300 signatures.

At 11:30am we will hold a demonstration of public support for divestment, outside the County Hall.

Organisers Maya & Gill say we’re well prepared for many supporters to join us for the demonstration:

  • Digital flyers for the event are available here and many have already been sent out on social media.
  • Slogans/chants have been devised (download printable copies here)
  • We’ll have mince pies! These symbolise traditional seasons wishes for “Peace to all mankind”. We hope the council will actualise these aspirations for peace by divesting.

Gill recommends the following ideas for lobbying councillors during the demonstration:

  • Councillors may express committent to the Council’s fiduciary duty, (ie their duty to make money) Answer: that the Council also has an ESG policy (ie an ethical policy) which, if adhered to, prohibits them from taking blood money
  • Councillors may feel that because the Pensions Committee is semi-independent, councillors can’t tell it what to do. Answer: But they can INFLUENCE it by demanding it commits to divest from the 10 toxic companies.
  • Where councillors express support for divestment, ask how they envisage helping the campaign going forward.
  • Point out the increased possibility of May elections – now that the mayoral election has been put back to 2028
